Abstract

Speaking English is one of the essential skills that students must master, espe-cially when learning a foreign language. One of the supporting aspects in develop-ing speaking skills is reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is not only related to the ability to recognize vocabulary and sentence structures but also in-volves a deep understanding of meaning, context, and the purpose of the text being read. Strengthening reading comprehension can help students organize their ideas better when speaking, especially when discussing or retelling texts such as narra-tives.
This research aimed to obtain empirical data on the effectiveness of students who are taught by using Role-Play based-reading comprehension activity have bet-ter speaking skills than who are not taught by using Role-play Based- Reading Comprehension Activities of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Jenangan Ponorogo.
The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental de-sign, involving two classes: an experimental class and a control class. The popula-tion consisted of 114 tenth-grade students, and the sample was taken purposively, comprising 29 students in the experimental class and 28 in the control class. The teaching implementation in the experimental class used role-play-based reading comprehension activities. Students were engaged in reading narrative texts and then performed role-plays based on the characters and events in the texts. This treatment aimed to encourage active speaking through meaningful interaction. Meanwhile, the control class received conventional teaching using the TBLT (Task-Based Lan-guage Teaching) approach through group discussions and text analysis without role-play. The data were collected using oral tests (speaking performance) and documen-tation and were analyzed using the independent sample t-test.
The results showed that the average post-test score of the experimental class's speaking ability was 81.79, while the control class scored 68.43. Based on the data analysis, the p-value (sig. 2-tailed) was .000, which is lower than the significance level of 0.05. This indicates that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. In conclusion, the role-play-based reading comprehension activity has a statistically significant effect on improving students' speaking skills.
