Speaking is one of the most important skills that students must have in mastering a language. However, many students find it difficult to speak, and their speaking ability is still relatively low. Many students struggle to express their ideas, have difficulty pronouncing and understanding words, and are apprehensive about making mistakes in speaking English. Students also feel less confident when speaking English. This can be seen from their attitude of avoiding eye contact, nervous body language, and also avoiding English conversations and discussions. The teaching techniques in the classroom seem monotonous, so students feel bored and less enthusiastic in learning. The 7ESL AI application is one of the media that can improve speaking skills. This application is designed to train students in speaking using phrases and conversations with Artificial Intelligence.
This study aims to determine whether there is a significant difference in improving speaking skills and confidence between the students in the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Ponorogo who are taught using the 7ESL AI application and those who are not.
This study applied a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design. This study used two classes, an experimental group and a control group. The population of this study was the seventh grade at SMPN 1 Ponorogo, consisting of 302 students. The sample in this research was 30 students in the experimental class and 30 students in the control group. The research sample was taken using the purposive sampling method by selecting subjects who have similar characteristics and abilities. The data collection procedures were tests and questionnaires. To analyze the data, the researcher used the independent sample T-test formula.
The results showed that the average score of the experimental class's post-test speaking skills was higher than the control class. The average score of the experimental class's post-test speaking was 76.53, while the control class was 69.47. In addition, the results of the T-test calculation showed that the T-test value was higher than the T-table (4.429 > 1.672). Based on hypothesis testing, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Likewise, the results for the confidence questionnaire in the average score of the post-test of the experimental class are higher than the control class. The average score of the post-test of the experimental class is 79.23, while the control class is 74.34. In addition, the results of the T-test calculation show that the T-test value is higher than the T-table (2.663 > 1.672). Based on hypothesis testing, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. So it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in speaking skills and confidence between students who are taught using the 7ESL AI application and those who are not taught using the 7ESL AI application in the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Ponorogo.
