Abstract
Meaning is a crucial element in achieving the goal of communication. In pragmatics, it is emphasized that proper interpretation of meaning requires attention to context. Moreover, speech act theory states that utterances are not merely sequences of words conveying information, but simultaneously involve the performance of actions through those utterances. Therefore, the analysis of illocutionary acts in the dialogues of The Wild Robot movie is expected to enhance understanding of how context functions in communication and to help recognize the types of actions contained within speech in order to grasp its full meaning.
This study aims to analyze the illocutionary acts used by the characters in The Wild Robot movie. The analysis is conducted by identifying the types of illocutionary acts and explaining their functions or intended meanings based on the context of each utterance, using Searle’s speech act theory. Understanding speech acts can improve one's ability to interpret meaning more effectively.
This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of utterances spoken by the characters in the movie, collected through documentation techniques using the movie script as the primary source. The researcher categorized the data based on Searle’s theory of speech acts and analyzed them by interpreting the context and function of each illocutionary act. The results are presented in descriptive form.
The findings show that five types of illocutionary acts were used by the characters in The Wild Robot movie according to Searle’s classification: assertives, directives, expressives, commissives, and declaratives. Among these, expressives were the most dominant with 17 utterances, followed by directives with 14 utterances, assertives with 7 utterances, commissives with 6 utterances, and declaratives with 3 utterances. The dominance of expressive illocutionary acts indicates that The Wild Robot not only delivers messages through actions but also strongly builds emotional depth and relationships among characters through expressive language use.
