This research analyzes the plot structure and social conflicts found in Trifles, a one-act play written by Susan Glaspell. The drama, set in a patriarchal rural society, exposes gender inequality through subtle symbolism and domestic observations. The study explores how the narrative develops and how social conflict is embedded in the characters’ interactions.
The objectives of this study are: (1) to analyze the plot structure of Trifles using Freytag’s Pyramid, and (2) to identify and classify the types of social conflict that occur in the drama based on Lewis A. Coser’s theory, including conflict of social position, conflict of interest, and conflict of role. The research aims to reveal how the plot progression is closely tied to the social tensions.
This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, using library research as the primary technique. Data were collected by closely reading the drama script and identifying relevant plot stages and conflict expressions. The researcher also conducted textual analysis to interpret the symbolic meaning of actions, dialogue, and character behavior in relation to social conflict theory. Data analysis were collected by critical analysis of the text based on Freytag’s theory of plot and Lewis Coser’s theory of social conflict.
The first findings indicate that Trifles follows a linear plot structure consisting of five stages based on Freytag’s theory. Exposition, where the characters and gloomy setting are introduced. Rising action, where emotional tension and small clues begin to surface. Climax, marked by the discovery of the dead bird symbolizing Mrs. Wright’s suffering. Falling action, where the women face a moral dilemma and resolution in which they choose to hide the evidence. The second finding reveals three types of social conflicts based on Lewis A. Coser’s theory: conflict of social position, as seen in the women’s marginalization by male authority conflict of interest, reflected in the contrast between the women’s empathy and the men’s legalistic approach, and conflict of role, especially experienced by Mrs. Peters, who struggles between her duty as sheriff’s wife and her compassion as a woman.
