Abstract

Hamidah, Lutfia Awiddatul. 2025. Students’ Learning Styles and the Implementation of Differentiated Learning in the Merdeka Curriculum: A Case Study at SMAIT Darut Taqwa Ponorogo. Sarjana’s Thesis, English Language Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute of Ponorogo. Advisor: Fenty Andriani, M. Pd.
Key Words: Differentiated Learning, Learning Style, Merdeka Curriculum.
Differentiated Learning is an instructional approach that allows teachers to tailor learning content, processes and products to students’ diverse learning styles, readiness and interests. Each student has a different way of understanding the lesson; therefore, teachers are expected to provide various learning choices that can accommodate each student’s learning style, so that all their learning needs can be met optimally. The urgency of this research is to increase understanding of how Differentiated Learning is implemented within the framework of Merdeka Curriculum (the Indonesian Independent Curriculum), along with the challenges faced by the teachers in applying this approach in the classroom.
The objectives of this study are: 1) To identify the types of learning styles among eleventh grade students at SMAIT Darut Taqwa Ponorogo, 2) To explore how Differentiated Learning based on students’ learning styles is implemented in English classes at SMAIT Darut Taqwa Ponorogo, 3) To analyze how teachers deal with students’ diverse learning styles through Differentiated Learning, and 4) To identify the challenges faced by teachers during the implementation of Differentiated Learning.
This research used a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects of this study were 65 eleventh grade students at SMAIT Darut Taqwa Ponorogo. The data collection techniques used by researcher were interview, observation, and documentation. The data analysis technique follows the framework of Miles Huberman and Saldana, including data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The findings of this study reveal that among the eleventh grade students at SMAIT Darut Taqwa Ponorogo, 36% are visual learners, 35% are kinesthetic learners, and 29% are auditory learners. To accommodate this diversity, teachers implement Differentiated Learning by adapting content, processes, and products to meet students’ different learning styles. They utilize various media and provide various learning activities. However, challenges such as time management, students’ varying abilities and limited resources hinder the effectiveness of Differentiated Learning.
