Abstract

English writing skills play an important role in expressing ideas, feelings, and experiences, especially in the form of story texts that requires coherence, structure, and creativity. However, the teacher realized that many students face challenges in organizing their ideas and maintaining a logical flow in writing. This study entitled “Exploring the Impact of Mind Mapping on the Tenth Grade Students' Ability in Writing Recount Text at MAN 3 Madiun” was conducted to investigate the implementation and effectiveness of mind mapping as a learning strategy in writing recount text.
The research focuses on how mind mapping is implemented in the classroom, its effect on students' writing performance, and the challenges faced by teacher during its implementation. The findings aim to contribute theoretically and practically to English language teaching by offering insights into mind mapping as a tool to improve students' writing ability and promote student-centered learning.
The descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with English teacher, documentation, and analysis of students' recount text writing results. The data in this study were analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana.
The results showed that mind mapping facilitated students' planning of ideas before writing recount texts. The technique had a positive impact on students' writing ability, especially in terms of content, vocabulary, and organization, helping them to structure their ideas more coherently. However, difficulties remained in grammar and mechanics, indicating the need for ongoing support. Challenges such as students' limited comprehension, limited learning time, and students' dependence on the teacher can be gradually overcome by providing visual examples and gradual guidance throughout the writing process.
