Abstract

Language is the main key in communicating, especially English which acts as an international language that unites various groups of people around the world. It's evident in its ability to facilitate communication, promote cultural exchange, and serve as a tool for personal and professional development In learning English, it is important to understand the science related to language, known as linguistics. A significant branch of linguistics is pragmatics, which examines how context shapes meaning, including the influence of social situations and interpersonal relationships on language use and politeness. Within pragmatics, the study of speech acts, which analyzes how people perform actions through language. This study will further explore the application of speech act theory in a specific context.

Based on the background of study, this research aimed to analysis what types of speech acts are widely used by Ramanujan in the conversations in the movie The Man Who Knew Infinity and how cultural and background differences influence the understanding and interpretation of the speech acts used.

The researcher used a descriptive qualitative design. Descriptive qualitative design is particularly effective for exploring complex phenomena where the goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. The researcher collected and analyzed data simultaneously to draw conclusions. The researcher applies this approach to analyze the script of the movie The Man Who Knew Infinity in the form of dialogue, with the aim of showing various types of speech acts and their classifications.

This study analyzed illocutionary acts in The Man Who Knew Infinity identifying five types based on George Yule's theory: representatives (asserting, stating, etc.), directives (asking, commanding, etc.), declaratives (utterances changing reality), commissives (committing, promising), and expressives (honoring, complaining, etc.). The movie highlights how differing communication styles, stemming from cultural (high-context Indian vs. low-context British) and academic backgrounds, initially impede understanding between characters. However, the narrative subtly depicts a gradual adaptation and learning process as they navigate these differences. Ultimately, the application of High-Context vs. Low-Context theory provides a valuable framework for interpreting the nuances of communication within the movie, underscoring the significant impact of cultural context on interpersonal interactions in cross-cultural settings.
