Abstract
Deixis refers to words or expressions that the meanings depend on specific
contexts, such as time, place, or speaker. In the context of watching films, viewers
often struggle to understand the intended meaning if they are not fully focused or
miss important information in the dialogue. Therefore, understanding language
function is crucial, as it explains the purpose of communication, whether to inform,
express emotions, or request something. By understanding deixis and language
function, viewers can better grasp the intended meaning of conversations in the
film, despite potential misunderstandings due to unclear context or lack of attention.
The aims of this research are to classify the forms of deixis based on
Levinson’s theory that found in movie The Professor and The Madman.
Furthermore, it also analyzes the langugae function throught Jakobson’s theory.
This research was descriptive qualitative with the transcript of the film The
Professor and The Madman as the data. In data collection, documentation is
essential. This study used content analysis to analyze the data. The steps to analyze
the data were specifying the phenomena to be investigated, selecting the media to
be used, formulating exhaustive and mutually exclusive coding, deciding on the
sampling, training the coders, analyzing the data, and finally, drawing conclusions
from the analysis.
The results of this study indicate that there are 2805 data which included
five types of deixis in The Professor and The Madman script based on Levinson’s
theory. They were person deixis appeared 1150 times, time deixis appeared 1185
times, place deixis appeared 83 times, discourse deixis appeared 133 times,and
social deixis appears 254 times. Then, The researcher found 188 data which
included six types of language function in The Professor and The Madman script
based on Jakobson’s theory. They were referential function appeared 110 times,
emotive function appeared 33 times, conative function appeared 35 times, phatic
function appeared 4 times, metalingual function appeared 1 times, and poetic
function appeared 5 times.
