The data were collected through observation and interview. And to analyse the data, the researcher used Miles and Huberman that consisted of three stages namely data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing.
Based on the data analysis, it was found that: English teacher implemented Cognitive Strategy, which was appropriate for teaching reading comprehension, such as practicing, receiving and sending messages, analysing and reasoning, and creating structure for input and output. However, one of the strategies under the receiving and sending messages strategy was not utilized in the classroom. Challenges faced by the teacher in implementing this strategy included the lack of teacher training focused on cognitive strategy, the
unavailable of specific materials for teaching these strategies, limited English language proficiency as English was not the native language, and students’ low motivation in learning. To overcome these challenges, the teacher took several solutions, such as developing personal knowledge about the strategy, integrating the strategy into classroom activities, using English and Indonesian language to teach the strategy and giving
encouragement to increase students’ motivation.
