Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental aspect of English language proficiency, serving as the foundation for reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Although students are increasingly exposed to English through digital media, including movies, vocabulary development remains a challenge due to factors such as ineffective learning strategies, low motivation, and mismatched learning styles. English-language movies offer an engaging and contextual medium for language exposure, particularly for students with visual and auditory learning preferences. However, their effectiveness in enhancing vocabulary may vary based on individual learning styles.
This study, conducted within the International Class Program (ICP) at MAN 2 Ponorogo, aims to examine the extent to which students’ movie-watching habits and learning styles classified under the VARK model (Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic) relate to their vocabulary mastery. Specifically, it investigates whether these variables are significantly correlated, either individually or simultaneously, with students’ vocabulary mastery.
This quantitative research employed a correlational design. It involves 25 students from the eleventh-grade International Class Program (ICP) at MAN 2 Ponorogo. Data were collected using a students' habit questionnaire, the VARK learning style inventory, and a vocabulary mastery test. The data analysis used Pearson product-moment correlation, Spearman rank correlation, and multiple linear correlation to determine individual and simultaneous correlation among the variables.
The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between students’ movie-watching habits and vocabulary mastery (r = 0.933, sig. = 0.05). A positive correlation was also found between visual learning style and vocabulary mastery (r = 0.673, sig. = 0.000), as well as for the auditory learning style (r = 0.494, sig. = 0.012). In contrast, negative correlations were found for the read/write learning style (r = -0.421, sig. = 0.036) and the kinesthetic learning style (r = -0.551, sig. = 0.004). Furthermore, a significant simultaneous relationship was identified between students’ English movie-watching habits and learning styles with vocabulary mastery (R = 0.964, Sig. F Change = 0.000). These results suggest that frequent and purposeful exposure to English-language movies, when aligned with students’ preferred learning styles, can significantly enhance vocabulary acquisition. Thus, it is recommended that English language instruction incorporate multimedia resources such as movies and adapt teaching strategies to accommodate various learning styles.
