Abstract

Mahmudah, Nahdiyatul. 2022. The Effectiveness of Role Play on Students’ Speaking Skill at SMA N 2 Ponorogo. Thesis, English Education Department, Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty, State Institute for Islamic Studi of Ponorogo (IAIN). Advisor .
Key words: Speaking Skill, Role Play Method, Descriptive Text.
Role play is essential in the teaching of English because it allows students to experience talking in a variety of social situations and roles. As a result, role play in the classroom is a fantastic way to help kids set the tone and assist their learning.
Almost all students in foreign countries, including Indonesian students, study English to improve their speaking skills. Speaking is utilized for a variety of reasons. Each goal could be to make social contact with others in order to convey thoughts or convince someone, or explain factual information.
The goal of this study was to see if there is a substantial difference between pupils who are taught utilizing the role play method and those who are not.
This study used a quantitative technique as well as a quasi-experimental design. The participants in this study were all tenth grade students at SMA N 2 Ponorogo in the academic year 2021/2022. A total of 72 students from classes X MIPA 1 and X MIPA 2 were included in the sample. Interviews, tests, and documentation were used to obtain data. To analyze the data, the researcher utilized the normality, homogeneity, and t-test formulas to see if there was a significant difference in students' speaking ability between those who were taught using the hopscotch game and those who were not.
According to the t-test results, the t-test value of 9,139 is larger than the t-table value of 1,671 at a significant 5 percent level with df=35. It indicates that Ha has been accepted whereas Ho has been denied. So, in the academic year 2021/2022, teaching speaking skills using the "role play approach" was successful in enhancing students' speaking skills in the tenth grade of SMA N 2 Ponorogo
