Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of YouTube videos as a learning medium in improving students’ writing ability, particularly in composing recount texts. Writing is often perceived as one of the most challenging English skills, as it requires not only linguistic accuracy but also creativity and organization. The integration of video-based learning is expected to make writing more engaging, contextual, and meaningful for learners.
The main objective of this study is to determine whether YouTube videos can effectively enhance students’ writing performance in recount text, focusing on the improvement of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The research was conducted at MA Miftahul Ulum Kedungpanji, involving 15 tenth-grade students as participants. A quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was applied. During the treatment, the students were taught recount text writing using selected YouTube videos that demonstrated real-life storytelling and narrative structures.

The students’ writing performance was assessed through tests conducted before and after the treatment. The analysis showed a significant increase in students’ scores, from a pretest mean of 61.47 to a posttest mean of 85.40 (p < 0.05). The calculated effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.32) indicated a strong effect of the treatment, confirming that YouTube videos had a positive influence on students’ writing ability.
In conclusion, using YouTube videos as a learning medium proved to be an effective and engaging strategy for teaching recount text writing. It not only improved students’ linguistic performance but also fostered motivation, creativity, and participation during writing activities. However, future studies are recommended to include a control group and a larger sample size to enhance the validity and generalizability of the findings.
