Task-Based Learning (TBL) integrated with digital communication platforms such as HiLokal can be used as an effective learning medium in English language teaching, particularly to improve students’ speaking skills. However, many students still face difficulties in expressing their ideas fluently and confidently in English due to limited opportunities for real communication and lack of authentic speaking practice. To overcome these challenges, the use of HiLokal provides students with real-time communication experiences with native and fluent speakers, allowing them to practice English in meaningful and interactive contexts.
This study aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in students’ speaking skills between those taught using Task-Based Learning through HiLokal and those taught without using the platform. Specifically, this study aimed to determine whether there was a significant effect of using Task-Based Learning through HiLokal, based on the theory proposed by Willis and assessed using the speaking rubric developed by Brown.
This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving two classes of the eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Sambit. The experimental class was taught using Task-Based Learning through HiLokal, while the control class was taught using team game tournament methods The data were collected from students’ speaking tests, which included both pre-tests and post-tests, and were analyzed using the Independent Sample t-test to identify the difference between the two groups.
The results of the study revealed a significant difference in speaking performance between the experimental and control groups. The mean score of the experimental class increased from 55.03 in the pre-test to 62.97 in the post-test. The Independent Sample t-test analysis showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a statistically significant improvement in the speaking skills of students taught through HiLokal. Although the increase in the mean score was not very large, it was statistically significant. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of Task-Based Learning through HiLokal had a positive and significant effect on improving students’ speaking skills at SMA Negeri 1 Sambit
