Pronunciation plays a vital role as a core component of speaking ability. Mastering pronunciation helps students communicate clearly and avoid misunderstandings in conversations. Hothe researcherver, in many classrooms, students still face difficulties in producing accurate sounds, correct stress, and intonation. The lack of pronunciation practice and technological support often leads to low confidence in speaking English. To overcome these problems, technology-based learning tools such as the ELSA (English Language Speech Assistant) application can be used to provide immediate feedback and improve pronunciation accuracy through engaging and interactive exercises.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the ELSA application is effective in improving students’ pronunciation skills in English. Specifically, the researcher aims to identify whether there is a notable difference in pronunciation performance betthe researcheren students who are taught using the ELSA application.and those who are taught through conventional methods.
This study applied a quantitative method using a quasi-experimental design. The participants the researcherre tenth-grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the 2024/2025 academic year. Two classes the researcherre chosen as samples: class X6 served as the experimental group, and class X7 served as the control group, making a total of 66 students. The data the researcherre obtained through pre-test and post-test sessions that assessed students’ pronunciation performance. The collected data the researcherre analyzed using an Independent Sample t-test to compare the mean scores of both groups, and Cohen’s d was employed to determine the effect size of the treatment.
The results shothe researcherd that the experimental group achieved a higher average post-test score (201.3) compared to the control group (165.7). The t-test indicated a statistically significant difference (Sig. = 0.000), and the effect size was very large (Cohen’s d ≈ 2.75), demonstrating that the ELSA application substantially improves students’ pronunciation skills. In conclusion, the ELSA application is highly effective in enhancing students’ pronunciation accuracy and speaking confidence, making it a valuable digital tool to support English learning.
