ABSTRACT
Hidayat, Faris. 2025, with the thesis entitled “Study of English Teacher Experiences in Implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in teaching at SMKN 1 Jenangan Ponorogo”, English Language Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo. Keywords: Merdeka Curriculum, Teacher Experiences, Good Practices
This research was motivated by the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum as a national educational innovation aimed at providing flexibility for schools and teachers in designing learning that is student-centered and aligned with individual characteristics, potential, and needs. Despite its progressive orientation, the implementation of this curriculum in vocational high schools has encountered significant challenges, particularly in terms of teacher readiness, technological literacy, and infrastructure availability.
The purpose of this research is to identify the challenges faced by teachers in adapting their teaching strategies to the demands of the curriculum and to rexplore the good practices that emerged during the implementation process.
This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design, using observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation to obtain comprehensive insights into teachers’ experiences in carrying out the Merdeka Curriculum. The data were analyzed by Miles Hubberman’s analysis encompassing data cobdenstation, data display and drawing conclusions.
The findings reveal that (1) teachers experienced several obstacles, such as limited digital literacy, insufficient training, and difficulties in conducting formative assessments that meet the principles of differentiated learning. Then, (2) good practices were also identified, including stronger collaboration among teachers through discussion forums, the use of digital platforms to support hybrid learning, the development of contextual teaching modules tailored to students’ fields of study, and the application of project-based learning models that successfully enhanced students’ creativity, independence, and active participation. These findings are expected to provide theoretical contributions to the study of curriculum implementation and practical benefits for teachers, schools, and policymakers in formulating more effective and sustainable strategies for the successful implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in vocational education settings.
