Abstract
In today’s global era, English is important for communication and accessing
information. However, teaching English in Indonesia faces challenges like limited
practice opportunities and teacher-centered methods. These make it hard for
students to develop good communication skills. Collaborative learning, a student
centered approach, encourages active participation, critical thinking, and real use of
language. This study aims to explore how collaborative learning can improve
students’ English skills.
This study addresses the following questions: how is the collaborative
learning method implemented in teaching English at MTs Al-Islam Joresan
Ponorogo, what challenges are faced during its implementation, and what are
teachers’ perceptions of the method. The primary objectives are to investigate the
implementation, identify the challenges, and explore teachers’ views on the
collaborative learning method in English teaching at MTs Al-Islam Joresan
Ponorogo.
This study employs a qualitative experimental approach using observation,
interviews, and documentation as the main data collection techniques. Observations
were conducted to see how collaborative learning was applied in real classroom
situations. Interviews with the English teacher and students provided insights into
their experiences and perceptions of the method. Documentation such as students’
work and lesson plans supported the analysis. The participants included one English
teacher and students from Class VIIK at MTs Al-Islam Joresan, Ponorogo.
This study shows that using the collaborative learning method in teaching
English at MTs Al-Islam Joresan has improved student engagement and
understanding. Students actively worked in groups, which helped them understand
sentence structure better. However, some problems appeared, such as time
management and conflicts between group members, with some groups struggling
to finish on time. Despite this, teachers saw the method positively, believing it
helped improve students’ social skills and peer support. The collaborative method
also created a friendly and interactive learning atmosphere where students felt
comfortable sharing ideas and learning together. These results highlight the need
for careful planning to make collaborative learning more effective.
