Abstract
Politeness strategies are a crucial aspect of linguistic interaction, as they enable
speakers to manage face, maintain harmonious communication, and navigate social
hierarchies. In the context of English language learning, understanding politeness strategies is
crucial for enabling students to communicate appropriately across different social situations.
The movie “The Devil Wears Prada” serves as a relevant example for analyzing how
characters employ various politeness strategies to express intentions, negotiate power, and
maintain interpersonal relationships.
This study aims to analyze the politeness strategies used by characters in the movie
“The Devil Wears Prada” using Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory. The focus of
this study covers two main issues, namely: (1) what types of politeness strategies are used by
the characters, and (2) how these politeness strategies maintain social interactions between
characters in the movie.
This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The research design is content
analysis, in which all utterances spoken by the characters in “The Devil Wears Prada” were
examined to answer the two research questions related to politeness strategies and the
dynamics of social interaction in the movie.
The results of the study show that there are four types of politeness strategies used in
movies, namely positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record, and off-record. The
“positive politeness” strategy is the most dominant, used to build familiarity and solidarity,
especially among characters of the same social status. The “bald on-record” strategy is widely
used by powerful characters such as Miranda Priestly to show dominance and efficiency,
while “negative politeness” is used by subordinate characters to show respect and avoid
threatening the freedom of the people they are talking to. Meanwhile, “off-record” is used to
convey criticism or orders indirectly.
