The rapid development of digital technology in the 21st century has
influenced various sectors, including education, which now requires students to
master global competencies such as English. However, grammar remains one of the
most challenging aspects for students because it is often taught through
conventional methods that are abstract, monotonous, and less engaging, leading to
low motivation and limited ability to apply grammar accurately in real
communication. This issue is also found at MA Sulamul Huda Ponorogo, where
students still struggle with constructing correct sentences and show low enthusiasm
in learning grammar. Therefore, there is a need for innovative learning media that
can make grammar learning more interesting, practical, and motivating for students.
This study used a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design to
examine the effectiveness of Duolingo in improving students’ grammar ability at
MA Sulamul Huda Ponorogo. Class X A served as the experimental group and Class
X B as the control group. Research data were collected through pre-test and posttest, supported by observations and documentation. The instruments were validated
and proven reliable. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests
to determine the significance of the treatment.
Based on the results of the study, it may be concluded that Duolingo supported
students’ grammar development in a meaningful way. The prerequisite analyses
indicated that the data met parametric assumptions, with normal distribution shown
by Shapiro–Wilk values (control pretest = 0.096; control posttest = 0.059;
experimental pretest = 0.165; experimental posttest = 0.051; all > 0.05) and
homogeneous variances confirmed by Levene’s test (pretest = 0.446; posttest =
0.718; both > 0.05). The independent samples t-test further showed that the two
groups started from a comparable level of grammar ability (pretest Sig. (2-tailed) =
0.545 > 0.05), yet differed significantly after the intervention (posttest Sig. (2-
tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05; t = -22.422). In line with this result, the experimental class
demonstrated a stronger increase in mean scores (47.39 to 82.83) than the control
class (48.50 to 64.25). This pattern was also reflected in the N-Gain analysis, where
the experimental class obtained a higher average gain (67%) compared to the
control class (30). In summary, the overall evidence suggests that Duolingo
contributed to higher grammar achievement and greater learning improvement than
conventional instruction..
