Vocabulary mastery is an essential component in learning English, as it forms the foundation for students’ abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. However, many junior high school students still struggle to acquire new vocabulary. Therefore, an engaging and effective learning strategy is needed, one of which is the English Spelling Bee activity. This study aims to describe the implementation of the English Spelling Bee to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at SMPIT Insan Madani Madiun.
This research employed a mixed-method design involving a total of 50 students. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, along with pre-tests and post-tests administered to all participants. The study focused on two main aspects: first, the implementation of the Spelling Bee activity in the classroom; and second, the comparison between students’ pre-test and post-test results.
The findings showed that the Spelling Bee activity was implemented effectively and created an interactive learning environment that actively engaged students. The analysis of the pre-test results in Class A, which used the teacher’s regular instructional method, indicated lower levels of vocabulary mastery and slower learning responses. In contrast, the class that learned through the Spelling Bee demonstrated higher motivation, stronger participation, and quicker understanding of the vocabulary presented. The post-test results further highlighted a significant difference between the two classes, with students taught through the Spelling Bee showing noticeable improvement. These outcomes suggest that the Spelling Bee provides a more enjoyable and stimulating learning experience, helping students grasp vocabulary more easily and learn more quickly compared to conventional teaching methods.
