Keywords: Translation Strategies, Complex Sentence, Novel.

Complex sentences are made up of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses, resulting in a structure that expresses detailed and interrelated thoughts. Complex sentences frequently necessitate additional attention in translation because grammatical changes between languages might alter meaning. Translation strategies are the ways that translators employ to accurately and organically convey messages from one language to another. These strategies include literal translation, transposition, modulation, cultural adaptation, cultural equivalent, borrowing, expansion, explicitation, and reduction.

The primary goal of this study is to discover the translation strategies utilized in translating complex sentences in The Midnight Library. The study uses Peter Newmark’s theory of translation strategies as its primary framework and Holger Diessel’s theory of complex sentences to classify and describe the syntactic examined in the novel.

This study employed a qualitative descriptive design with a content analysis approach. The data consisted of complex sentences from The Midnight Library’s English and Indonesian translations. Data were gathered through documentation by reading both versions of the novel, finding complex sentences, and categorizing them according to Diessel’s theory. The data were evaluated by determining translation strategies using Newmark’s framework. The analysis procedure entailed familiarizing and organizing, coding and reducing, and interpreting and representing data to derive conclusions about how translation strategies preserved or altered the original meaning in the target language.

According to the findings, adverbial clauses constitute the most complex sentences, followed by relative and complement clauses. Transposition is the most common of the nine recognized translation strategies used across all types of complex sentences. This prevalence implies that structural differences between English and Indonesian have a considerable influence on translation decisions. The frequent use of transposition shows that grammatical restructuring is required to ensure clarity and naturalness in the target language. These findings emphasize the relevance of syntactic adaptation when translating complex sentence structures and contribute to a better understanding of translation strategy application in literary texts.
