Textual meaning is about the way the text is constructed through a system, and
the system known as theme system. This system can be observed in various forms of
media, including news articles. News articles are one of the most popular types of
information sources. Therefore, the researcher aims to analyze the theme system in The
JakartaِۙPost’sِۙNewsِۙArticlesِۙonِۙFreeِۙNutritiousِۙMealِۙIssueِۙinِۙIndonesia.
The objectives of this research are to categorize and explain the types of themes
inِۙnewsِۙarticlesِۙofِۙTheِۙJakartaِۙPost’sِۙNewsِۙArticlesِۙonِۙFreeِۙNutritiousِۙMealِۙIssueِۙinِۙ
Indonesia.
This research employed a qualitative approach with a content analysis design.
DataِۙanalysisِۙfollowsِۙCreswell’sِۙtheory,ِۙtheِۙstepِۙtoِۙidentifyingِۙtheِۙthemesِۙorِۙpatternsِۙ
of language in a document (the researcher categorizes themes or patterns of the data
based on the 3 types of themes).ِۙTheِۙ15ِۙnewsِۙarticlesِۙofِۙTheِۙJakartaِۙPost’sِۙserveِۙasِۙ
data sources. ThisِۙstudyِۙusedِۙHalliday’sِۙthemeِۙsystemِۙtoِۙanalyze the themes to identify
what are themes exist in there.
Based on the researcher's analysis, 3 types of themes based on Halliday’sِۙtheory
areِۙfoundِۙinِۙ15ِۙnewsِۙarticlesِۙofِۙTheِۙJakartaِۙPost’sِۙonِۙFreeِۙNutritiousِۙMealِۙIssueِۙinِۙ
Indonesia. Total amount of themes included: topical themes are 507 with 66% of total
data, interpersonal themes are 192 with 23% of total data, and textual themes are 72
with 11% of total data. So, total amount of themes is 771 (100%). In theme markedness
analysis, the researcher found the amounts of unmarked themes are 302 with 60% of
total data and marked themes are 205 with 40% of total data, in 507 clauses. This
research recommends the used ofِۙtheِۙ15ِۙnewsِۙarticlesِۙofِۙTheِۙJakartaِۙPost’sِۙonِۙFreeِۙ
Nutritious Meal Issue in Indonesia. In the findings, researcher found the unique in
variation of clause that can interest the readers, as a tool for learning English such
writing and reading in that 15 news articles. Finally, the researcher has concluded that
this research can also help to stimulate the students in English learning with more
variation of learning media.
