Abstract

This research analyzes the representation of gender and culture in the "Work in Progress" English textbook, which is published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and serves as a reference for the Merdeka curriculum for tenth-grade high school students. This study is motivated by the pervasive spread of unfiltered foreign culture due to technological advancements, which necessitates the reinforcement of Indonesian noble values and gender and cultural education in learning materials to protect the younger generation from negative influences.
The primary objectives of this research are threefold: (1) to explore how gender is represented in the "Work in Progress" textbook; (2) to explore how culture is represented in the same textbook; and (3) to clarify the alignment of these gender and cultural representations with Indonesian educational objectives.
Employing a qualitative research approach, this study utilized content analysis to systematically examine the visual and textual content within the "Work in Progress" textbook. This method involved meticulously scrutinizing the textbook's content to identify and categorize elements pertaining to gender representation and cultural diversity.
The findings reveal in this research are: (1) An existing gender imbalance, primarily characterized by a male dominance in illustrations, mentions, and assigned roles, which tends to reinforce traditional gender stereotypes despite some positive portrayals of women in non-traditional activities. (2) The textbook commendably represents Indonesian culture according to: Products, Practices, Perspectives, Community, and Person. (3) The textbook largely aligns with Indonesian educational goals by integrating Pancasila values and supporting the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5) framework, thereby contributing to character development, critical thinking, and a global perspective. This research underscores the importance of gender and cultural learning for students and advocates for the development of more inclusive, relevant, and qualified textbooks for future generations.
