Keywords: presupposition, pragmatics, up movie, content analysis
Presupposition is an important aspect of communication that allows speakers and listeners to understand meaning more effectively, even when that meaning is not explicitly expressed. In everyday life, presupposition helps build
mutual understanding and efficiency in speech. This study was conducted to examine the types of presupposition found in the dialog of Up movie based on George Yule's (1996) theory, as well as to identify the most dominant type and its function in building narrative meaning and character. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis method. The data source is obtained from the transcripts of the characters' dialog in Up.
The objectives of this study are: 1) to identify the types of presupposition that appear in the movie Up. 2) to describe and explain the dominant presupposition types in the movie Up. 3) to explain the function of the dominant
type of presupposition in Up movie. This research uses literature research as the research design and descriptive qualitative research for descriptive qualitative as
the research approach. The researcher took data based on the characters' dialog in the movie Up. The primary data source of this research uses the script of the movie Up. While secondary data sources come from journals, books, and internet sites. In conducting this research, researchers used documentary techniques to collect data.
The result of this study shows that there are six types of presupposition used in the Up movie script. The six types are existential, factive, lexical, structural, non-factive, and counterfactual, with a total of 26 utterances consisting
of existential with 17 utterances (65.38%), factive with 1 utterance (3.85%), lexical with 2 utterances (7.69%), structural with 4 utterances (15.38%), nonfactive with 1 utterance (3.85%) and counterfactual with 1 utterance (3.85%). As a result, existential is the dominant type of presupposition found in the movie Up.
The function of the most dominant type (existential) is as a tool to introduce, build, and maintain the continuity of information about the existence of characters, objects, and situations in the story. This research is expected to contribute to the development of pragmatics studies, especially in the realm of film discourse analysis,as well as being taken into consideration in context-based English language learning and implicit meaning. The contribution of the movie Up to the world of education is that it can be a reference as a medium for the teaching-learning process.
