school
English speaking skills are essential competence for vocational high school
students in the era of globalization. However, many vocational students still
encounter difficulties in speaking English fluently and confidently due to
conventional teaching methods that lack digital technology integration. This
phenomenon was observed among students of Class X AK 4 at SMKN 1 Ponorogo,
who demonstrated limited vocabulary, inaccurate pronunciation, and low motivation
in speaking learning activities.
The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the implementation of Digital
Project-Based Learning in teaching English speaking skills through the Voice in
Action project at SMKN 1 Ponorogo, (2) to analyze students' perceptions toward the
implementation of Digital Project-Based Learning in speaking activities, and (3) to
analyze the challenges faced by students in completing digital speaking projects and
how those challenges were addressed.
This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study research design.
Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews at
SMKN 1 Ponorogo. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model,
consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the
data was ensured through methodological triangulation, source triangulation, and
member checking.
The findings of this study indicate that the implementation of Digital Project-
Based Learning through the Voice in Action project was conducted in several stages,
including planning, role-based collaborative implementation, teacher facilitation, and
digital product creation in the form of videos uploaded to YouTube. Both the
students' and the teacher's perceptions were generally positive; as the integration of
digital media enhanced students' motivation and sense of responsibility. However,
several challenges were encountered, such as unstable internet connectivity,
unfamiliarity with video editing applications, and limited vocabulary and
pronunciation confidence. These challenges were successfully addressed through
continuous teacher facilitation, structured scaffolding, and peer collaboration.
