Abstract

Septiani, Rezki Putri. An Analysis of Translation Strategies of Idiomatic Expressions in The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Sarjana’s Thesis, English Language Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, UIN Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo. Advisor: Desi Puspitasari, M.Pd.

Keywords: Idiomatic expressions, translation strategies, The Midnight Library.

Idiomatic expressions are linguistic elements that are difficult to translate word for word, as their meanings are figurative and deeply rooted in the cultural context of the source language. When translating literary works from English into Indonesian, translators often face significant challenges due to differences in vocabulary and cultural values between the two languages, which frequently make it difficult to find suitable idiomatic equivalents in the target language. Therefore, Matt Haig’s novel The Midnight Library and its Indonesian translation, Perpustakaan Tengah Malam, serve as the primary subject of study, given that this work is rich in idiomatic expressions that reflect a complex narrative style and emotional depth, making it worthy of deeper analysis from a linguistic and translation strategy perspective.
This study aims to analyze the types of idiomatic expressions found in Matt Haig’s novel The Midnight Library and the translation strategies used in translating idiomatic expressions in The Midnight Library from English to Indonesian. The theoretical framework used in this study is based on the classification of idiomatic expressions proposed by Fernando in Liu and translation strategies by Baker, which consists of several strategies a translator may apply in transferring meaning from the source language to the target language.
This study employed a qualitative method using content analysis. The data, consisting of idiomatic expressions along with their translations, were collected from all 69 chapters of the novel through careful reading, identification, and recording. Data analysis was conducted based on the established framework.
This study reveals 689 idiomatic expressions in the novel. Semi-idioms were the most common type, accounting for 402 instances, followed by pure idioms with 164 instances, and literal idioms with 123 instances. Meanwhile, the most frequently used translation strategy was translation by paraphrase, with 349 instances, followed by using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form with 209 instances, using an idiom of similar meaning and form in 112 cases, borrowing the source language idiom in 16 cases, translation by omission of the entire idiom in 2 cases, and translation by omission of a play on the idiom in only 1 case. Based on these results, it can be concluded that semi-idioms dominate the idiomatic expressions in this novel, and translation by paraphrase is the most commonly chosen translation strategy.
