Speaking skill is one of the essential competencies in English language
learning, requiring students to express their ideas orally in an effective way.
However, based on preliminary observation at SMA Bakti Ponorogo, student’s
speaking ability was still relatively low. Students tended to lack confidence to speak
because they had limited vocabulary and were less active in speaking activities.
This condition was caused by the use of conventional teaching methods that
provided limited opportunities for students to practice real communication.
Therefore, a more interactive and communicative teaching method is needed, one
of which is the use of Role Play Based Flashcards.
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Role Play Based Flashcards
in teaching students’ speaking skills, to examine whether there is a significant
difference in speaking ability between students who are taught using Role Play
Based Flashcards and those who are not.
This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi experimental
design with a Non Equivalent Control Group Design. The populations of the study
consisted of 29 students eleventh grade, divided into 15 students in the experimental
class and 14 students in the control class. The data were collected through speaking
tests in the form of pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using paired
sample t-test, independent sample t-test, and N-Gain score to measure the
improvement of students’ speaking ability.
The results of the study revealed that Role Play Based Flashcards were
effective in improving students’ speaking ability. The experimental class showed
better speaking performance than the control class after the treatment, indicating a
positive effect of the method on students’ speaking skills. This finding was
supported by the N-Gain score of 0.4706 in the experimental class, which was
categorized as moderate, compared to 0.1818 in the control class, which was
categorized as low. Therefore, Role Play Based Flashcards can be considered an
effective method for enhancing students’ speaking ability.
