Abstract

Politeness strategies are important in communication because they help speakers maintain good relationships. These strategies are used to avoid being impolite, reduce conflict, and consider others’ feelings. In the context of education, Classroom communication is not only about exchanging information, but also about building positive relationships between teachers and students. The use of politeness strategies helping them develop respectful and effective communication skills. This study uses the movie Forrest Gump directed by Robert Zemeckis as the object of
analysis. Language functions refer to the communicative purposes of an utterance, while speech acts explain the actions performed through language. Speech act theory serves as a link between language functions and politeness strategies because it explains how speakers achieve communicative goals through interaction. Certain
speech acts may threaten the speaker’s or hearer’s face. Therefore, speakers often employ politeness strategies to minimize these threats and maintain harmonious
communication. In this way, language functions describe the purpose of an utterance, speech acts explain the action performed, and politeness strategies ensure that the action is expressed in a socially appropriate manner.
This study aims to classify the types of politeness strategies used by the main characters and to examine how these strategies contribute to the different
language functions in the movie Forrest Gump. The researcher applies Brown and Levinson theory to analyze politeness strategies and Roman Jakobson’s theory to
identify language functions. This research employed a qualitative method with content analysis design.
The data are taken from the transcript, focusing on the utterances produced by the main characters, Forrest and Jenny. The data collection is conducted through
documentation, and the data are analyzed through several steps, including familiarizing, organizing, coding, interpreting, and representing the data. The
researcher establishes the reliability of the data by consistently employing the same coding categories and re-examining part of the data asfter some time has passed to
conduct the intra-rater reliability check
The findings show that the main characters in Forrest Gump use a variety of politeness strategies in their interactions. Positive politeness appears with 17
utterances across 10 types, while negative politeness is found in 10 utterances with 5 types. In terms of language function, these strategies reflect three main functions
namely referential, conative, and emotive. Referential function appears only in positive politeness, while conative and emotive functions are expressed throughboth positive and negative politeness strategies. politeness strategies play an important role in communication by helping speakers express their intentions while maintaining good relationships. The results of this research can help teachers teach politeness strategies and language functions, as well as improve students' understanding of real-life communication.
