Abstract
Listening skills are a fundamental aspect of English language learning. This skill not only serve as a foundation for developing other skills but also play a crucial role in the overall language acquisition process. In the context of listening lessons, students face several challenges, such as difficulty understanding English audio conversations that are spoken quickly or delivered with a particular accent. Students also struggle to interpret the words spoken by the speaker. Therefore, by using the STAD method based on video subtitled, students are expected to get more interested in improving their listening skills.
This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using the Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) method-based video subtitled to improve the listening skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Ma’arif Balong, Ponorogo. In other words, this study compares the listening skills of students taught using the Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) method with video subtitled to those taught using conventional methods.
This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The study involved two classes; the experimental class was taught using a STAD method-based video subtitle, while the control class was taught using a conventional method. The sampling technique used in this study was cluster random sampling. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests. Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk test to test for normality, the Levene test to test for homogeneity, and the Independent T-test using SPSS statistical software version 25.
The results of the study showed that students who learned using the STAD method-based video subtitles achieved better performance than students who learned using the conventional method. The mean score in the experimental class on the post-test was 79.44, while the mean score of the control class on the post-test was 65.00. In other hand, the independent samples t-test showed a significant value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that there is a significant difference between the two classes. Based on the results of the independent samples t-test, it can be concluded that using the STAD method-based video subtitle is effective in improving the listening skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Ma’arif Balong.
