Speaking is one of the most important skills in English language learning because it enables students to communicate ideas, opinions, and information effectively. However, many EFL students still experience difficulties in speaking English due to limited opportunities for practice, lack of confidence, and fear of making mistakes. To overcome these challenges, extracurricular programs such as English Clubs provide students with additional opportunities to practice English in a more relaxed and communicative environment. At MAN 2 Magetan, the English Club is implemented through various speaking activities, including storytelling, speech, discussion, and debate, which support the development of students’ speaking skills.
This study aimed to investigate the implementation of the English Club as an extracurricular activity in teaching speaking skills at MAN 2 Magetan. It specifically explored the activities conducted in the English Club, the supporting and inhibiting factors, and the contribution of the program to students’ speaking development.
This study employed a qualitative case study design. The participants were the English Club supervisor and students who actively participated in the program. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using the interactive model of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the implementation of the English Club.
The findings revealed that the English Club was implemented through four main activities: storytelling, speech, discussion, and English debate. These activities provided students with meaningful opportunities to practice speaking and improve their confidence. The study also found several supporting factors, such as motivation, active participation, interaction, and teacher support, while the inhibiting factors included shyness, fear of making mistakes, limited vocabulary, and the use of the mother tongue. The findings suggest that the English Club plays an important role in enhancing students’ speaking skills and communicative competence. Therefore, English Clubs can be considered an effective extracurricular program for supporting English language learning beyond the classroom.
