Abstract

Grammar is one of the essential components in learning English, yet many students still face difficulties in understanding and applying grammar rules correctly. Conventional grammar teaching methods are often considered less engaging and unable to accommodate students’ learning preferences in the digital era. Therefore, innovative learning media are needed to improve students’ grammar mastery.
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of “The Grammar Goat” TikTok channel in teaching grammar at the English Department students of State Islamic University of Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo. Furthermore, the findings of this study are expected to provide useful information for English lecturer specifically in teaching grammar.
This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving an experimental class and a control class. The population of this study consisted of fourth semester students of the English Education Department. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling technique. The experimental class was taught using “The Grammar Goat” TikTok channel as multimedia learning media, while the control class was taught using the Grammar Translation Method with textbook-based instruction. The instruments used to collect the data were pre-test and post-test consisting of multiple-choice, error analysis, and combining sentence questions. The collected data were analyzed using normality test, homogeneity test, and independent sample t-test through SPSS 25.
The findings showed that the experimental class achieved a higher improvement compared to the control class. The mean score of the experimental class increased from 68.6 in the pre-test to 83.1 in the post-test, while the control class improved from 67.7 to 74.35. Furthermore, the result of the independent sample t-test showed that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.006, which was lower than 0.05 (0.006 < 0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted. This indicates that there was a statistically significant difference between students who were taught using “The Grammar Goat” TikTok channel and those who were taught using conventional methods.
