Abstract
Pronunciation and self-confidence are considered important factors in
supporting students’ speaking skills in learning English as a foreign language.
Speaking is one of the essential language skills that requires students not only to
pronounce words accurately but also to have confidence in expressing their ideas
orally. However, many students still experience difficulties in speaking due to
inaccurate pronunciation and lack of confidence during communication. Therefore,
pronunciation and self-confidence are assumed to contribute to students’ speaking
performance.
This study aims to determine whether there is a significant correlation
between pronunciation and speaking skills, between self-confidence and speaking
skills, and between pronunciation and self-confidence simultaneously with
speaking skills of fourth-semester English students at State Islamic University of
Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo. Furthermore, the findings of this study
are expected to provide useful information for English lecturers and students
regarding factors influencing speaking skills.
This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational research design.
The population of this study consisted of 59 of fourth-semester English students at
State Islamic University of Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo, and 33
students as a sample. Data were collected through pronunciation tests, self-
confidence questionnaires, and speaking tests. The data were analyzed using
Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and Multiple Correlation analysis conducted
through the linear regression procedure in SPSS.
The results showed that the correlation coefficient between pronunciation
and speaking skills was r = 0,378 with p-value = 0,030 < 0,05, indicating a
significant positive correlation categorized as low correlation. Meanwhile, the
correlation coefficient between self-confidence and speaking skills was r = 0,285
with p-value = 0,107 > 0,05, indicating that there was no significant correlation
between self-confidence and speaking skills. Furthermore, the multiple correlation
analysis showed that pronunciation and self-confidence simultaneously had a
significant relationship with speaking skills with a p-value = 0,027 < 0,05 and R
Square = 0,213, indicating that pronunciation and self-confidence together were
associated 21.3% of the variation in student’s speaking skill. It can be concluded
that pronunciation has a significant correlation with speaking skills, while self-
confidence does not show a significant correlation with speaking skill. However,
pronunciation and self-confidence simultaneously have a significant relationship
with students’ speaking skills.
