Abstract
Reading is a fundamental skill for vocational students as it enables them to access
global knowledge and technical information. At SMK PGRI 1 Ponorogo, students face
difficulties understanding English texts, mainly due to inconsistent reading habits and
limited vocabulary. Therefore, both reading habits and vocabulary are considered
important factors in improving students’ reading ability.
This study aims to examine the extent to which reading habits and vocabulary
mastery influence students’ reading ability at SMK PGRI 1 Ponorogo. Specifically, the
study investigates the influence of reading habits and vocabulary mastery on reading
ability, and the simultaneous influence of both variables on students’ reading ability.
This research employed a quantitative approach with an ex post facto and
correlational design. The population consisted of 124 eleventh-grade students of SMK
PGRI 1 Ponorogo in the 2025/2026 academic year. A sample of 39 students was determined
using the Slovin formula and selected through a random sampling technique. Data were
collected through a 23-item reading habit questionnaire, a 16-item vocabulary mastery test,
and an 11-item reading ability test. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression
analysis with the assistance of SPSS.
The findings revealed that reading habits and vocabulary mastery simultaneously
had a significant influence on students’ reading ability, with an F-value of 408.534 and a
significance level of 0.000. The coefficient of determination was 0.958, indicating that
95.8% of the variation in students’ reading ability could be explained by the two
independent variables, while the remaining 4.2% was influenced by other factors outside
this study. The results also showed that vocabulary mastery had a significant positive
influence on reading ability and was the most dominant factor affecting students’ reading
performance. In practical terms, students with stronger vocabulary mastery demonstrated
better comprehension of English texts, including identifying main ideas, understanding
detailed information, and interpreting meaning accurately. Meanwhile, reading habit did
not significantly influence reading ability when examined separately, indicating that
frequent reading alone is insufficient without adequate vocabulary knowledge. Therefore,
strengthening students’ vocabulary mastery while fostering positive reading habits is
essential for improving students’ reading ability.
