Abstract

Speaking ability is one of the crucial aspects of English language mastery, but the learning process often faces unique challenges, especially in groups of students with special characteristics. At SMA Negeri 1 Slogohimo, there is a Special Sports Class (KKO) where students have a tendency to be physically active and have a busy training schedule. The difference in characteristics between regular class students and KKO students requires teachers to apply the right teaching approach and strategy so that learning materials can be delivered effectively in the midst of limited time and student focus.
This study aims to describe and analyze the strategies used by English teachers in teaching speaking skills to students in the KKO class of SMA Negeri 1 Slogohimo. In addition, this research also focuses on identifying various challenges that arise during the teaching process in the classroom and how solutions are taken by teachers to overcome these obstacles so that learning goals are still achieved.
The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with a descriptive type of research. Data were collected through triangulation techniques which included participatory observation in the classroom, in-depth interviews with English teachers who teach KKO classes, and documentation related to learning activities. Data analysis is carried out interactively by following the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of three main stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion or verification.
The results of the study showed that teachers used various strategies such as role-play in pairs, games or ice breaking, group discussion, presentations and the use of visual media and interactive technology to attract students' interest. The main challenges found include low student confidence or student motivation, limited vocabulary mastery, as well as physical fatigue due to sports schedules, lack of student attendance in class due to frequent match schedules. As a solution, teachers apply motivation that is relevant to the athlete's career, provide direct feedback, and use ice breaking to re-increase students' concentration and make students more interested and provide additional material to those who were not present before. The use of varied strategies has been proven to increase the involvement and courage of KKO students in communicating using English.
