This study is motivated by the urgency of character education as the primary goal of national education. As stated in Article 3 of Law No. 20 of 2003 on the National Education System, which emphasizes the development of students’ character. Religious character is closely related to character education, as religious values serve as the foundation for shaping students’ attitudes and behaviors. However, the rising incidence of violence and bullying in schools indicates that the internalization of religious character values has not been optimal. This situation suggests a gap between the normative goals of education and the reality on the ground. In Islamic tradition, patience is a fundamental value in the formation of religious character, as emphasized in Surah al-Baqarah: 153. Although studies on patience in an educational context have been widely conducted, research that delves into its conceptual foundations from classical sources such as Riyāḍuṣ Ṣāliḥīn remains relatively limited.
The objectives of this study are to (1) describe and analyze the concept of patience in the book Riyāḍuṣ Ṣāliḥīn by Imām an-Nawawī. (2) Present and analyze the relevance of the concept of patience in the book Riyāḍuṣ Ṣāliḥīn to the religious character education of students.
This study uses the library research method by searching, collecting, and analyzing various written sources, especially the book Riyāḍuṣ Ṣāliḥīn, as the main data. The data is then analyzed using the content analysis method to obtain the core meaning of the text systematically and objectively.
The results of the study indicate that (1) the concept of patience in the book Riyāḍuṣ Ṣāliḥīn is interpreted as an active, rather than a passive, act. The classification of patience is divided into three categories: patience in obedience to Allah, patience in abstaining from what Allah has forbidden, and patience in accepting Allah’s decree. (2) based on the analysis of hadiths regarding patience in Riyāḍuṣ Ṣāliḥīn, it was found that the values of patience contained therein have a strong relevance to various indicators of religious character. This relevance is evident in the form of attitudes and behaviors that reflect religious obedience, tolerance, and self-control in daily life.
