Abstract

This research emerged from the increasing exposure to artificial intelligence among university students in their academic writing activities. The extensive use of AI tools raises questions about whether students' understanding and ability to use AI, referred to as AI literacy, influence their writing quality. However, the relationship between AI literacy and EFL writing performance remains underexplored, particularly in the Indonesian university context. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether AI literacy has a significant influence on the quality of EFL students' descriptive paragraph writing. This study was conducted at UIN Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo and involved 16 sixth-semester students as the research sample, employing an ex post facto research design, as the researcher did not manipulate any variables but rather examined conditions that had already occurred.
This study used a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design. AI literacy was measured using a questionnaire, while the quality of descriptive paragraph writing was assessed through a single-paragraph writing test, scored using the Sarah Cushing Weigle framework as the scoring rubric. The data were then analyzed using simple linear regression to determine the influence of the two variables.
The results of this study indicated that AI literacy did not significantly influence the quality of EFL students' descriptive paragraph writing. However, the data revealed a hint of a negative relationship between the two variables, suggesting that higher AI literacy may be slightly associated with lower descriptive paragraph writing quality.
It can be concluded that AI literacy does not have a significant influence on students' descriptive paragraph writing quality in this context. The negative trend found suggests that over-reliance on AI tools may affect students' independent writing performance. Additionally, other factors such as vocabulary mastery, grammatical competence, and prior writing experience may play a more direct role in determining descriptive paragraph writing quality. Therefore, further research with a larger sample and broader variables is recommended.
