Meliy Alfita Salma. Harnessing the Threads App as a Media for English Learning:

Key Words: Threads App, EFL, Gen Z, Digital Practice, Sosial Media
The development of digital technology, especially social media, opens up
new opportunities in learning English as a foreign language (EFL), especially
outside the formal classroom. In the context of the EFL, the limited exposure to
authentic language is a challenge, so social media can be an alternative to accessing
real use of English. Generation Z as digital natives tend to use digital platforms in
the learning process. One of the platforms used is Threads, which allows for text
based interactions in real-time. In EFL learning, Threads have the potential to be
informal spaces that support the improvement of language skills through authentic
exposure, social interaction, and everyday language use practices.
This study aims to explore how gen z uses the application threads to support
English language learning, identify the features that are considered most helpful,
and find out the challenges faced along with the solutions used by gen z in the
process.
This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected
through
questionnaires,
semi-structured
interviews,
observations,
and
documentation. The data obtained was analyzed using Miles and Hurberman data
analysis techniques which include data collection, data condensation, data
presentation, and conclusion drawn. Participants consisted of 7 students who were
selected using Google Form.
The results of the study showed that students used Threads App as an
informal learning medium with the main activities in the form of reading English
posts, scrolling on the homefeed, and following accounts related to English
learning. Features such as homefeeds, posts, comments, and follows are considered
the most helpful in providing authentic language exposure and supporting
interaction. However, students also face several challenges such as the use of slang,
new vocabulary, complex texts, random feeds, and limited internet access. To
overcome this, students use strategies such as utilizing the translation feature,
searching for the meaning of words independently, reading gradually, selecting
relevant accounts, and adjusting the usage time to network conditions.
