Keywords: Group Discussion, Reading Comprehension, English Teaching
In the current global age, English is crucial for education and accessing information. Nonetheless, there are still difficulties in teaching reading comprehension at the Indonesian junior high school level, including low motivation, a limited vocabulary, and an emphasis on teacher-centered instruction. These problems often result in students becoming passive and impede their comprehension of texts. Thus, the group discussion method is used as a student-centered strategy to enhance students’ engagement and reading comprehension.
This research was conducted to answer three main research problems: (1) how the teacher implements the group discussion method in teaching reading comprehension, (2) How do the students engage in reading comprehension activities through the implementation of the group discussion method at the eighth-grade students of MTs Al-Islam Joresan Ponorogo, and (3) what advantages and disadvantages arise from the implementation of the group discussion method in teaching reading comprehension at MTs Al-Islam Joresan Ponorogo.
This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of the research were an English teacher and eighth grade students of MTs Al-Islam Joresan Ponorogo in the academic year 2025/2026. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation. To ensure data validity, triangulation of data sources and techniques was applied. The collected data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
This research revealed three main findings. (1) The implementation of the group discussion method in teaching reading comprehension at the eighth grade of MTs Al-Islam Joresan Ponorogo was conducted through well-prepared materials, clear learning objectives, and guiding questions. The teacher facilitated and monitored the discussions, while students actively read, identified main ideas, and shared their opinions. (2) Students engaged in reading comprehension activities through active participation in group discussions, exchanging ideas, responding to guiding questions, identifying important information, and collaborating with their peers to understand the reading texts. (3) The implementation of the group discussion method provided several advantages, such as encouraging student participation, collaboration, and interaction during reading activities. However, challenges such as unequal participation and time management were also identified, indicating the importance of effective teacher guidance and classroom management in implementing the method.
