Abstract
Keywords: reading interest, reading comprehension, effect, relationship, English.
Reading comprehension is an essential skill in English language learning that
enables students to understand, interpret, and evaluate information from written
texts. One factor that may influence students’ reading comprehension is reading
interest. However, students have different levels of reading interest, which may be
associated with differences in their reading comprehension ability.
This study aimed to determine the relationship and the effect of students’
reading interest on their reading comprehension at SMP Progresif Al-Mardliyyah
Madiun. This study employed a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design.
The population consisted of 70 eighth-grade students. 23 students were involved in
the instrument try-out, while 47 students were selected as the research sample. The
instruments used were a reading interest questionnaire and a multiple-choice
reading comprehension test. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics,
normality tests, linearity tests, Pearson Product-Moment correlation, and simple
linear regression with the assistance of SPSS.
The findings revealed that the data were normally distributed and linear. The
Pearson Product-Moment correlation analysis showed a very strong and significant
positive relationship between students’ reading interest and reading comprehension.
Furthermore, the simple linear regression analysis indicated that reading interest
had a significant positive effect on students’ reading comprehension. These findings
suggest that students with higher reading interest tend to demonstrate better reading
comprehension ability. Therefore, both the alternative hypotheses regarding the
relationship and the effect were accepted.
In conclusion, students with higher reading interest tend to achieve better
reading comprehension. Reading interest is an important factor that contributes to
the improvement of students’ reading comprehension in English language learning.
