Digital storytelling (DST) integrated with local folktales can be used as an effective learning medium in English language teaching, particularly to enhance students’ speaking skills. However, many students still face difficulties in expressing their ideas and speaking confidently in English due to lack of communicative competence, limited opportunities to practice speaking, and lack of interactive learning media. To overcome these challenges, the use of digital storytelling-based local folktales provides students with interactive medium, allowing them to practice English in meaningful and interactive contexts.
This study aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in students’ speaking skills between those who taught using digital storytelling-based local folktales and those who taught without using the media. Specifically, this study aimed to determine whether there was a significant positive effect of using digital storytelling-based local folktales and assessed using the speaking rubric adapted from Douglas Brown.
This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving two classes of the tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Ponorogo. The experimental class was taught using digital storytelling-based local folktales, while the control class was taught using traditional storytelling method. The data were collected from students’ speaking tests, which included both pre-tests and post-tests, and were analyzed using the Independent Sample t-test to identify the difference between the two groups.
The results of the study revealed a significant difference in speaking skills between the experimental and control groups. The mean score of the experimental class increased from 49.82 in the pre-test to 58.45 in the post-test. The Independent Sample t-test analysis showed a significance value of 0.004 < 0.05, indicating a statistically significant improvement in the speaking skills of students who was taught through digital storytelling-based local folktales. Although the increase in the mean score was not highly significant, it was statistically significant. Therefore, it was conclude that the use of digital storytelling-based local folktales had a positive and significant effect on enhancing students’ speaking skills at MAN 1 Ponorogo.
