Abstract

Handwriting is personal, and students should not be forced to use the same
style in copying. Poorly formed letters can affect how readers view the writer,
important for creativity and assessments. English spelling is hard because sounds
and spellings often don’t match. Writing communities have their own rules, and
ignoring them can make writing awkward.
The aims of this study are : 1) describes the student’s difficulties in
composing descriptive text in tenth grade of MA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo, 2)
identify several factors that influences the difficulties, 3) the way to overcome those
difficulties.
This study used a qualitative research design which the kind of research is
descriptive qualitative. The data was gained from the interview with eleven students
of tenth-grade MA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. Data analysis used in this study
was descriptive narrative using the Milles and Hubberman model which are data
reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion.
The results of the study show that 1) students’ difficulties in writing
descriptive texts relate to the correct use of capital letters, the correct spelling of
individual words or sentences, the use of appropriate punctuation, the ability to
transcribe text content from Indonesian into English, and the ability to structure
sentences, paragraphs, and text effectively, 2) the factors that cause students
difficulty writing descriptive text are the self-esteem is reflected in the
dissatisfaction experienced by some students due to the limited vocabulary they
have when transcribing English, the willingness to communicate, where some
students stated they were not embarrassed to discuss with friends or teachers and
others stated that they tried to work on the material independently and showed it
when the results were deemed appropriate, students feel not confident enough in
their writing abilities, students with the limited vocabulary, anxiety, empathy,
extrovertion, and 8) motivation. According to the results of the study, the strategies
to overcome students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text include using writing
prompts, revising their work, reading to gain ideas and vocabulary, and asking for
feedback from teachers or peers. Students should practice writing more frequently
to develop their skills. They are also encouraged to read widely to enrich their
vocabulary and gain ideas, as well as actively seek and apply feedback to improve
their writing.
