Assertive acts are an important type of illocutionary act that speakers use to state facts, describe situations, and express their beliefs about reality. In education and films like Ron’s Gone Wrong directed by Octavio E. Rodriguez, Sarah Smith, and Jean-Philippe Vine, it supports knowledge transfer and story development. However, the ways these assertive acts are expressed is strongly influenced by sociolinguistic factors, particularly language style, which ranges from frozen to intimate based on social distance relationship between speakers. Understanding the link between assertive acts and language style is important for effective communication and avoiding misunderstandings in daily life and language learning.
The aims of this research are to identify the types of assertive acts produced by the main characters in the animated film Ron’s Gone Wrong based on the theory of Searle and Vanderveken. Furthermore, it analyzes the types of language style used by the main characters through Martin Joos’s theory. Finally, the study examines how these assertive acts and language styles contribute to students’ pragmatic awareness in language learning.
This study used a descriptive qualitative design with a content analysis approach. The data, consisting of dialogues between the main characters in the film Ron’s Gone Wrong, were collected through documentation. The analysis included preparing the data, coding and reducing it, then grouping and describing the findings to identify linguistic patterns.
The results show 238 assertive utterances in Ron’s Gone Wrong, classified into 23 types based on Searle and Vanderveken, including assert, claim, affirm, state, deny, disclaim, assure, argue, rebut, inform, notify, remind, object, report, suggest, insist, hypothesize, guess, admit, blame, criticize, praise, and complain. In addition, from the total assertive utterances that represent the five language styles, only three were found in this study, namely consultative, casual, and intimate style. Moreover, the findings shows that assertive acts and language style contribute to pragmatic awareness in language learning, as explained by Bachman and Kasper. Assertive acts help show the speaker’s intention, while language style shows how the message is delivered in a social context. Together, they help students not only understand correct language forms but also use them appropriately based on social relationships and levels of formality.
