Suggestopedia, combined with instrumental music, is considered one of the effective approaches in English language learning, particularly in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. Vocabulary is an essential component of language acquisition; however, many students still encounter difficulties in understanding, memorizing, and using English vocabulary effectively. The use of music in the Suggestopedia method is expected to create a relaxed and enjoyable learning atmosphere, increase students’ engagement, and facilitate vocabulary learning.
This study aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between students taught using the Suggestopedia Method and those taught using the Direct Instruction Method with the English textbook based on the Merdeka Curriculum at MAN 2 Ponorogo. The findings of this study are expected to assist English teachers in implementing more interactive and effective teaching methods.
This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving two classes: an experimental class and a control class. The sample consisted of 72 students, with 36 students in the experimental class and 36 students in the control class. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test instruments. The pre-test was administered before the treatment to measure students’ initial vocabulary mastery, while the post-test was conducted after the treatment to identify students’ vocabulary improvement.
The experimental group received treatment using the Suggestopedia Method with instrumental music, while the control group was taught using the Direct Instruction Method. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test. The experimental group was taught using the Suggestopedia Method with instrumental music, and their mean score increased from 68.45 in the pre-test to 82.13 in the post-test. Meanwhile, the control group, which was taught using the Direct Instruction Method, showed a lower improvement, increasing from 66.20 to 70.75. The result of the independent samples t-test revealed that the Suggestopedia Method with instrumental music was effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery by creating a relaxed learning environment at MAN 2 Ponorogo.
