Abstract

Saputra, Bagus Adi. 2026. Transitivity Analysis Of “Free Nutritious Meal” (MBG) Program Related News On Tempo.Co”. Thesis. English Language Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Kyai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo. Advisor: Ahmad Nadhif M.Pd
Keywords: Transitivity, SFL, Free Nutritious Meal, MBG.
Mass media serves as an active instrument that constructs social reality through specific linguistic choices. The Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program has emerged as a highly discussed national strategic policy in Indonesia, garnering significant media attention regarding its complex implementation and logistical execution. While digital media outlets like Tempo.co extensively report on this initiative, research examining the linguistic construction of this policy from a micro-linguistic perspective remains limited. To address this gap, this study focuses on the grammatical representation of the policy within journalistic texts.
The aims of this study are to identify and describe the transitivity process types, participant functions, and circumstance elements found in MBG-related news texts on Tempo.co and to analyze and explain how experiential meaning is realized through the transitivity system within these news reports.
This study employed a descriptive qualitative design grounded in Michael Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory. Data were collected using documentation techniques and purposive sampling from a digital archive of 12 news articles published on Tempo.co throughout the 2025 calendar year. The collected clauses were subsequently analyzed utilizing Krippendorff's content analysis procedures, which include unitizing, coding, and drawing inferences.
The findings of this study indicate that the grammatical construction across the texts is predominantly driven by Material (36.15%), Verbal (28.17%), and Relational (21.36%) processes. Correspondingly, the Actor (19.58%), Sayer (17.66%), and Goal (17.51%) emerged as the most frequent participant functions, while Circumstances of Location heavily dominated the contextual landscape, accounting for 54.09% of the total circumstances. Experientially, the heavy reliance on Material processes objectively outlines concrete logistical executions and the physical experiences of beneficiaries, whereas Verbal processes mediate reality by juxtaposing official administrative claims with empirical evaluations from external stakeholders. Furthermore, Relational processes grammatically classify large-scale milestones into static states or mathematical equations. Ultimately, the transitivity system operates as an integrated network that allows the media to objectively map both physical events and reported statements surrounding the national policy.
