This study focuses on the types of slang, techniques for creating humor, and the functions of slang in the conversation between Deadpool and Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). Slang is typically used in informal settings, and humor can arise from expressing emotions, identity, and interpersonal relationships through it. In comedy-action films, slang plays not only a role in defining the characters but also in creating humor in interactions. Thus, this paper will explore how slang serves as a linguistic tool for creating humor.
This research aims to identify the varieties of slang used by Deadpool and Wolverine and to explore the contribution of slang to humorous tactics, as well as its social role in discourse.
This study used a qualitative descriptive method. Data is a slang expression found in the dialogue between Deadpool and Wolverine in the Deadpool & Wolverine film. Data were collected through observation and recording techniques. This analysis is based on Allan and Burridge’s theory of slang types, Long and Graesser’s humor strategy theory, and Zhou’s social function theory of slang.
The findings show the presence of 56 slang terms grouped under four types: Flippant Slang, Imitative Slang, Clipping Slang, and Fresh and Creative Slang. Among all types of slang, Flippant Slang was the prevalent one. Four types of humor were also observed in the film: sarcasm, teasing, irony, and clever replies, with sarcasm occurring most commonly. As regards their social functions, slang has played a role in the pursuit of self-identity, emotional expression, and politeness. Among all social functions, emotive feeling was the primary one.
