Abstract
Listening is one of the most important skills in learning English because it helps students understand spoken language and improve communication abilities. However, many students still experience difficulties in listening comprehension due to limited vocabulary, unfamiliar expressions, fast speech delivery, and the lack of engaging learning media. In addition, listening activities in the classroom are often conducted using conventional methods, causing students to feel less motivated and easily bored. This phenomenon encourages the use of digital learning media such as podcasts. Spotlight English Podcast on Spotify provides authentic, accessible, and interesting listening materials that can support students in improving their listening skills.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate how well students' listening skills were improved by the Spotlight English Podcast on Spotify. The goal of the study was to see whether students who learnt through the podcast and those who learned through traditional ways differed significantly in their listening achievement. Additionally, this study sought to gauge how much students' listening comprehension had improved following podcast-based learning exercises.
This study used a quasi-experimental design and a quantitative methodology. The participants were two classes of 58 eleventh graders from SMAN 1 Jenangan. While the control group was taught using traditional techniques, the experimental group was instructed utilizing the Spotlight English Podcast on Spotify. Pre-test and post-test listening tests with multiple-choice questions were used to gather data. IBM SPSS Statistics 25 was used to evaluate the gathered data using an independent samples t-test, homogeneity tests, and normality tests.
The findings of the study showed that the use of Spotlight English Podcast on Spotify significantly improved students’ listening skills. The experimental class demonstrated a substantial increase in scores, with the mean score improving from 38.27 in the pre-test to 84.13 in the post-test. However, the significance value of 0.121 (> 0.05) indicated no significant difference between the experimental and control groups. Therefore, Spotlight English Podcast on Spotify can be used as an alternative media for listening practice, although its effectiveness was not statistically significant.
