Abstract

Figurative language in song lyrics is the use of words or phrases that do not have a literal meaning, but rather use metaphors, symbols, or similes to convey emotions, messages, or stories poetically and creatively. More deeply, figurative language in songs is the art of painting meaning with figurative words, rather than simply telling a story directly.
The objectives of this study are: 1) To identify and classify the types of figurative language found in the selected English song lyrics by Tomorrow X Together based on Laurence Perrine’s theory. 2) To analyze and explain the contextual meaning of the figurative language within the narrative framework of the selected albums.
This study was conducted using descriptive qualitative research as the approach of this research. In this research, the primary data sources were taken from the lyrics of the Tomorrow X Together English songs.
The results of the research showed that from 5 songs, the research found 44 lyrics containing figurative languages that consist of 7 types of figurative languages, which are simile, metaphor, personification, symbol, paradox, hyperbole, irony. Tomorrow X Together (TXT) presents lyrics with emotional depth rich in contextual meaning. The song “Cat & Dog” signifies total devotion and identity transformation for the sake of loyalty, while “Magic” depicts the subject’s amazement at the presence of a figure who becomes a real miracle in a virtual world. Next, “Devil by the Window” highlights the inner struggle against manipulative temptations, followed by “Chasing That Feeling” about the courage to embrace harsh reality for the sake of maturity. Finally, “Over the Moon” interprets a mature promise of loyalty as a cosmic commitment that transcends the boundaries of space and time.
